2002 Queen Mother Memorial £5 Crown BU in Folder
A moving tribute to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Born in 1900, Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon married the future King George VI in 1923. She was Queen of the United Kingdom from 1936 until her daughter, Elizabeth II, acceded to the throne in 1952. Thereafter, she was affectionately known as the Queen Mother and remained consistently popular as the matriarch of the British royal family. She passed away at the age of 101 in 2002. Struck to commemorate her long life, this Brilliant Uncirculated Five Pound coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth by medallist and sculptor Avril Vaughan. It shows her wearing the Grenville Tiara and other jewels within a fine wreath. This is paired with Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the fourth official effigy used on her coinage. The edge inscription reads ‘STRENGTH DIGNITY LAUGHTER’ and is inspired by a passage form the Bible. This BU coin is made of the same cupro-nickel alloy as the coins in everyday circulation, but finished to a higher quality standard making it ideal for collectors. It comes in a presentation folder with positive quotes from members of the Queen Mother’s family and other notable figures, about her life and impact, as well as photographs from her 102 years. It weighs the standard 28.28 grams with a diameter of 38.61 millimetres.
